The Fine Print
Privacy Policy
Last updated · June 20, 2026
The Shoreline is a reading site. We do not require you to log in. We do not sell mailing lists. We do not run third-party ad networks. This page describes what does pass through us.
What we collect
Server logs. Our host records standard request metadata: IP address, user agent string, referrer URL, the URL fetched, and the time. Logs are retained up to 90 days for security and abuse prevention, then deleted on a rolling basis.
Cookies. We set one cookie, recording your choice on the cookie consent banner, so you do not see the banner again. We do not set advertising cookies or cross-site tracking cookies.
Aggregate analytics. We use a privacy-respecting analytics tool to count pageviews and identify the most-read pieces. We do not build profiles of individual readers.
Newsletter. If you subscribe to our reader letter, we retain your email address for the purpose of sending the letter and nothing else. You may unsubscribe at any time from any letter we send.
Correspondence. If you write to the editorial address, we retain the email until the matter is resolved, then archive it.
What we do not collect
We do not require or collect your name, mailing address, date of birth, or financial information. There is no account system.
Third parties
The site is served by Railway, our hosting provider, who acts as a data processor under a written agreement. Newsletter delivery is processed by a third-party vendor under similar terms. We do not share data with any other party.
Your rights
You may request that we delete any record we hold about you, including your newsletter subscription and any correspondence. Write to letters@theshoreline.co. We respond within fourteen days. Residents of jurisdictions with statutory data-protection rights (GDPR, CCPA, and similar) retain the rights granted by their laws.
Changes
This policy may be updated. Material changes will be noted at the top of this page and dated. Continued use of the site after a change indicates acceptance of the revised policy.
